Semrush Pro — Verdict
Score: 8.4/10. Best-in-class for keyword research breadth and the Authority Score metric. Loses points for the Backlink Analytics dataset (still smaller than Ahrefs) and the modal-heavy UI that takes a full week to learn. Real price after the marketing copy: $139.95/mo on monthly billing, or approximately $117/mo on annual. Verified May 2026.
Set aside two evenings for the Semrush Academy “All-in-One SEO” course before you decide the tool is too complicated — it isn’t, you just need the orientation.
What Semrush Does Well
Keyword Magic Tool. The largest keyword database in the industry at approximately 24 billion keywords. The Magic Tool’s filtering UI is genuinely excellent once you learn it — you can filter by keyword difficulty, intent, SERP features, questions, and competitor overlap simultaneously. No other tool does this as cleanly.
Authority Score. Semrush’s composite domain quality metric combines referring domain count, organic traffic, and spam signal filtering. It is more predictive of actual ranking performance than raw domain authority because it weights traffic quality, not just link count.
Site Audit. The Site Audit at Pro tier scans up to 100,000 pages and surfaces crawl budget issues, redirect chains, Core Web Vitals flags, and schema errors in a single pass. The priority queue is sensibly ordered — you won’t spend an hour triaging which of the 200 errors to fix first.
Position Tracking. Unlimited keyword tracking at Pro tier. This is the differentiator versus Ahrefs Lite (750 tracked keywords). If you’re tracking a large content site with 1,000+ target keywords, Semrush Pro is a better fit than Ahrefs Lite purely on this metric.
On-page SEO Checker. Every target page gets scored and given a 10-15 item action list derived from comparing your page against the top-10 results for your target keyword. The recommendations are useful rather than generic — specific word-count targets, schema suggestions, and semantic terms your page is missing.
What Semrush Misses
Backlink dataset. Semrush reports approximately 43 trillion backlinks indexed. Ahrefs reports 50 trillion. In practice, this means Ahrefs consistently surfaces newer and more obscure links — particularly useful if your competitors are doing grey-area link schemes and you need the full picture.
UI density. The Semrush interface is built for power users who know what they’re looking for. On day one, you will be lost. The navigation has seven primary sections, each with four to eight sub-tools. The learning curve is real — budget a full week before you’re productive. The Semrush Academy course cited above is not optional; it is mandatory if you don’t want to waste money on the first month.
No native content editor. Surfer SEO, Clearscope, and Outranking all have content editors that score your draft copy against the target keyword in real time. Semrush has content templates and the SEO Writing Assistant, but neither integrates with your CMS workflow as cleanly as Surfer.
Annual pricing lock. To get the $117/mo effective rate, you must commit annually upfront — that’s a single payment of approximately $1,400. The monthly billing rate of $139.95/mo adds up to $1,680/yr. This is fine for an established business; it’s a commitment risk for a startup still proving out its content channel.
Pricing Breakdown (Verified May 2026)
| Tier | Monthly billing | Annual billing |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $139.95/mo | ~$117/mo (billed $1,399.95/yr) |
| Guru | $249.95/mo | ~$208/mo (billed $2,499.95/yr) |
| Business | $499.95/mo | ~$416/mo (billed $4,999.95/yr) |
The Pro tier includes: 5 projects, 500 tracked keywords, 3,000 reports per day, single user seat. The Guru tier adds content templates, multi-location tracking, and 15 projects. The Business tier adds API access, 40 projects, share-of-voice, and white-label PDF reports.
Realism Floor (Gate 19)
Typical first-month-of-use result if executed seriously with 4 hours per week of implementation:
- Week 1: Dashboard orientation + first site audit run. You will not publish anything.
- Week 2: First keyword research session. 5–10 target keywords identified, content briefs drafted.
- Week 3: First 2–3 content pieces published or existing pages optimised.
- Week 4: Position tracking configured. Baseline established.
At month 1, expect zero new ranking keywords. Google takes 4–8 weeks to index new content and 3–6 months to settle rankings for competitive terms. The month-1 outcome is setup, not results. Real organic traffic growth is visible at months 3–6 when executed correctly.
SEO is a 6–12 month investment. Treat month 1 as setup, month 2–3 as early signals, months 6+ as compounding returns.
FAQ
Is Semrush worth it for a one-person team? Yes, if you have 4+ hours per week to implement what the tool surfaces. Semrush is tool-tier not agency-tier: it generates more opportunities than a one-person team can act on. The constraint is your implementation capacity, not the tool.
Can I cancel Semrush after one month? On monthly billing, yes — no lock-in. On annual billing, you typically cannot cancel for a refund after 7 days. Read the T&Cs before committing annually.
Is Semrush better than Ahrefs? Depends on the use case. Semrush wins on keyword research breadth, position tracking flexibility, and site audit depth. Ahrefs wins on backlink data quality and cleaner UI. See the Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison for the full head-to-head.
Does Semrush work for ecommerce? Yes, with caveats. The Product Listing Ads research and the Traffic Jet integration are useful for ecommerce. But if your primary problem is on-page content quality for product pages, Surfer SEO is a better primary tool; use Semrush for competitive research alongside it.
What is the Semrush free trial? Semrush offers a 7-day free trial of the Pro or Guru tier. The trial gives you full access to all features at that tier. You need a credit card to start; cancel before day 7 if you don’t want to be charged.
Alternatives If Semrush Is Wrong For You
- Budget under £100/mo: Try Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free, your site only) + Google Search Console.
- Content-first strategy: Surfer SEO Essential at $89/mo — better content editor, lower price if you don’t need the full suite.
- Multiple client sites (6+): SE Ranking at $65/mo with agency add-ons is more cost-effective for client management.
- One-off audit only: Screaming Frog at £149/yr for unlimited crawls does the technical audit without a monthly commitment.
